Sacrament
The Baltimore catechism defined a sacrament as “an outward sign
instituted by Christ to give grace.” God was in human form for 33 years
in the person Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Before Jesus left this world he
gave the Church outward signs of God’s continuing presence with us – the
sacraments. The outward signs of water (baptism), bread and wine
(Eucharist), and oil (sacrament of the sick and confirmation oil) make
God visible in a visible form. Today, on World Marriage Day, let us
recall the sacramental sign of marriage – the couple. Through the love
of the couple, others are exposed to the presence of God. The couple is
to mirror the love of God, and through their reflection of God’s love,
we receive grace. Each couple, united through a sacramental marriage,
is to be the outward sign through which we receive God’s grace. God is
made present today through the sacraments. May each married couple
appreciate their privilege of being the outward sign of God’s presence
in the world today and be a good reflection of our living and loving
God.
