Ministries
We are blessed here at Sacred Heart Church to have an increasing number of
young people (high school and college age) who are becoming involved in the
ministries during Mass. Some sing, some are lectors and an increasing
number are becoming Eucharistic ministers. This is a wonderful example for
others and an expression of their desire to serve God and the Church. In
canon law (canon 230) it states: “laity who possess the age and
qualifications determined by decree of the conference of bishops can be
installed on a stable basis in the ministries of lector and acolyte.”
Our Archdiocese has guidelines and can be viewed in full at
www.archdiocese.la/prayer/worship/guidelines/communion.html
These
guidelines state that the ordinary ministers of communion are the bishops,
priests and deacons. “If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not
present, the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him.
The faculty is granted to pastors and priest chaplains to appoint
extraordinary ministers of Communion in their parishes or institutions.”
The Archdiocesan requirements state that “Baptized and Confirmed Catholics,
fifteen years of age or older, are eligible for this ministry. They should
be persons who sincerely try to live the Gospel message in their communal
and individual lives. They should faithfully participate in the Sunday
Eucharist and with God’s grace strive to live their faith in every aspect of
their lives.” Proper training, commissioning and attire are expected.
Please support theses young people in their desire to serve. We need more
vocations in the Church and this service may be a stepping stone for these
young people. |
