Holy Water
Why
do some Churches remove the holy water from the doors of the Church during
Lent? Lent is a time of preparation for the Easter event, resurrection.
Originally Lent was a preparation time for those adults preparing for
initiation, hence pointing toward baptism. Removing the holy water can
serve in preparing the faithful for the Easter mystery of resurrection,
reflected in the sacrament of baptism. It can also remind us of these 40
days which Jesus spent in the desert, where water is scarce. Churches can
do a variety of things with environment and decorations to better reflect
the season we are celebrating. At Easter, spring life will abound with
flowers, water and white banners. May the simplistic Church environment of
this season prepare us for the new life of Easter.
