Paschal or Easter Candle
The Paschal Candle or Easter Candle is the large candle near
the baptism font. This candle is lit and remains in the sanctuary during
the 50 days of Easter. It is also used throughout the Church year for
baptisms and funerals. This candle represents the pillar of fire by which
God led the children of Israel from slavery to freedom, through the dusty
desert to the land flowing with milk and honey. Behind this candle, we
processed into the Church on the Easter Vigil, signifying our desire to
follow the pillar of fire, God’s light. Yet more importantly, this candle
represents our risen savior, Christ our Lord. On this candle we traced the
sign of Christ yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, the alpha and
omega. From it we take our own light, a flame divided but undimmed. All
who are baptized into Christ Jesus walk in its glow. May Jesus Christ, the
Light of the World, lead and illuminate our lives. As His children, let us
walk as children of the light. |
